So. The WEWY constest was announced. I think most of you have seen the results by now. Of course I didn't win. I would have been fine with not winning if the winners were absolutely amazing. Really, I would have. But out of all the winners, only about half of them impressed me. It seems like the ' popular ' artists won. It may sound harsh, but I didn't think that they had solid designs at all. And then there is that weird veriety in the winners. The rules said 'inspired by the game, but not derived from.' The grand prize winner set her character in the game world. Well, I guess all of the entried did that, but still. Those winning entried included extra info like battle style and personality and everything. This contest was supposed to be about design and nothing else. That is why I kept mine so plain, the design should speak for the character. All of the winners were top 200 when you looked at popularity ranking. Hell, I thought I had a good chance since one of my entried was in the top 200 popular ones. When they said over 7000 entries, I was expecting 10 winners that made me say 'wow.' I was sorely dissappointed. Simple as that.
I want to know if the development team was really involved with the judging. I'd think that since they know what makes a design great, that they would look past pretty colors and see the design for what it really is. I realize all of this ranting might sound pissy, but I'm kinda pissed off about it. I really got my hopes up, and I got smacked back down. It hurts when people you admire and even people you don't know say that you have to be top 10 and you don't get anything.
Most of this ranting probably isn't even coming from anger at the contest. It's probably anger at how life likes to screw you over. I want to apologize if any of the above rant seemed offensive or petty and I don't want to make excuses for my attitude, but I've had a lot of ups and downs lately. It seems like life has been giving me presents and then smacking me for enjoying them. I am not going to make excuses and try to get pitty from anyone. I'm just going to go dump all my frustration and sadness in to art. That is why most of my art is sad; I tend to get inspired when I am in the dumps and channel everything into that piece as a relief. I'm off to go do that.
